Swiss fans hailed their national football team in the early hours of Sunday, after their journey in the 2026 World Cup ended following a 1-3 loss to Argentina in the quarter-finals. After the defeat, Swiss supporters expressed pride in the team's efforts, and returned home early in the morning waving Swiss flags. A Swiss fan named Laura K. said: 'Switzerland team, you have earned a place in our hearts, you played with ten players against 11 from Argentina.' Swiss President Guy Parmelin confirmed on social media that coach Murat Yakin's team had captured the nation's hearts, adding: 'Despite today's disappointment, what strikes me above all is an exceptional journey and a cohesive team that stirred the enthusiasm of all of Switzerland.' Switzerland equaled its best previous achievements in World Cup history, reaching the quarter-finals in 1934, 1938, and the 1954 edition hosted on home soil.
