Spaniard Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin driver, confirmed that his priority after the Belgian Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship will be to return to his homeland as quickly as possible to watch the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday evening.

Alonso is racing in Belgium amid a difficult season for Aston Martin, which occupies tenth and penultimate place in the constructors' championship after collecting just one point in nine rounds. The team hopes that the upcoming car upgrades after the Spa-Francorchamps race will be a turning point in its results.

World Cup final tops Alonso's priorities

Alonso, a two-time world champion, told reporters: "It will be different this time because we don't expect much from the grand prix. Honestly, my main focus on Sunday will be to get home to watch the match."

Spain seeks its second world title in history when it faces defending champion Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final.

A race against time

The Belgian Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. local time, while the World Cup final begins at 9 p.m. European time, putting Alonso in a race against time to catch the match.

The Spanish driver explained: "It will be difficult because we will fly home, and I might only be able to watch the second half, missing the entire first half."

Colapinto: The match is more tense than the race

It is not just Alonso; Argentine Franco Colapinto, Alpine driver, and Spaniard Carlos Sainz, Williams driver, face the same situation due to the race coinciding with the World Cup final.

Colapinto said: "I will definitely be more nervous about the match than the race. Against England we experienced a lot of tension before we celebrated qualification, and if you don't suffer a little, you are not Argentine."

He added: "It was one of those matches that keeps you tense until the end, but it ended with great joy, so it was a long night, but very enjoyable."
