Ancelotti: We are confident.. and we don't need a plan to stop Haaland
Carlo Ancelotti, head coach of the Brazilian national football team, confirmed that his defenders do not need any instructions on how to limit the threat of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland ahead of their anticipated match on Sunday in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Haaland, 25, Manchester City star and last season's English Premier League top scorer, is among the candidates to win the Golden Boot after scoring five goals in three matches, and now faces a familiar opponent in Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal's center-back. Ancelotti said of Haaland, who has 60 goals in 53 international matches: 'Everyone knows how he plays.. I have nothing to explain to my defenders about how to face him.. clearly they have played against him several times.' He added: 'I don't think there is such a thing as a plan to counter Haaland.. I don't need to tell my players how to defend.' Ancelotti believes that Brazil's comeback against Japan in the round of 32 gave his players more confidence ahead of facing Norway. He said: 'We have to give our best, and I think we are at a stage that allows us to do that because we are confident.' He added: 'We got through a tough match against Japan, and we are ready for anything that might happen, as we were in our last match.' He revealed that Raphinha could be included in the squad, after missing the past two matches due to a thigh injury. He explained: 'He has made great progress. He is not at 100 percent fitness, but he is recovering very well and quickly, and he may sit on the bench, and we are very happy because he is a very important player for us.' Ancelotti also left the door open for Vinícius Júnior and Neymar to play together against Norway. The former leads Brazil's attack in the World Cup with four goals, while the all-time top scorer of the national team has only played a few minutes as a substitute, after recovering from a calf injury.
