Alvaro Arbeloa, who oversaw coaching of Real Madrid between January and the end of May, was appointed as the new manager of Fulham, replacing Portuguese Marco Silva, according to what the club, which finished 11th in the English Premier League last season, announced on Wednesday.

The former Spanish defender, 43, and 2010 world champion, signed a three-year contract.

The London club said in a statement: "The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as the new coach of Fulham."

Arbeloa had a brilliant playing career with Real Madrid, winning the Champions League twice, but achieved less success at the helm of the coaching staff of the "capital" team, after succeeding Xabi Alonso as manager in January.

Arbeloa knows the English Premier League well after also playing for Liverpool, and he replaces Silva, who resigned at the end of last season after leading the team to 11th place, before taking charge of Benfica, replacing Portuguese Jose Mourinho who will in turn return to Real Madrid.

Arbeloa said in a statement: "It is a real honor for me to embark on this new adventure with Fulham, the oldest club in London. I feel a great responsibility."

Arbeloa

The brief period of the Spanish manager at the helm of Real Madrid witnessed an early exit from the round of 16 of the King's Cup against Albacete, a second-division club, in addition to several painful league defeats that ended his hopes of winning the title.

Real Madrid also exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals against German Bayern Munich, ending a second consecutive season without titles.
