Historic Egypt-Argentina match sets new Google record
Google's search engine recorded a new record in usage rates during the World Cup, after witnessing the highest level of searches in its history following Argentina's late winning goal in a knockout match.
The match saw a dramatic comeback for Argentina, after Cristian Romero scored a goal, before Lionel Messi equalized in the 83rd minute with an own goal, then the Argentine team won in stoppage time, causing an unprecedented wave of searches on Google.
Nick Fox, head of Google's Knowledge and Information unit, said the search engine 'shattered all previous usage records,' explaining that the highest usage rate in Google's history came immediately after Argentina scored the winning goal.
The company did not disclose specific numbers, but a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that the highest rate of queries per second occurred immediately after the winning goal.
Google explained that the most widespread searches after the match were the phrase 'Argentina vs Egypt', along with global queries like 'Argentina vs Colombia', 'Messi's number of goals in the World Cup', in addition to questions related to refereeing decisions and controversial situations on the pitch.
This record comes at a time when Google is trying to maintain the status of the traditional search engine amid the increasing spread of artificial intelligence technologies and chatbots, despite its continued dominance of the global search market.
