English club Aston Villa signed Brazilian João Gomes, first-team player of Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was relegated to the second-tier Championship, on Monday, in a deal worth $51 million. The Europa League winners won the race to sign Gomes after Chelsea agreed to sign Morgan Rogers from the team led by Spanish coach Unai Emery. On the Gomes deal, Wolverhampton head coach Matt Jackson said: 'João deserves everything he gets from the game. He is the type of professional that coaches and players love, and that's why he will continue his path to remain the outstanding player we have known.' The 25-year-old, who has been capped 10 times for Brazil, also held negotiations with Spain's Atlético Madrid, but Villa convinced him to join. Gomes has made 130 appearances for Wolverhampton since joining from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2023, but he was unable to help prevent the team's relegation from the Premier League last season. Gomes' transfer to Villa Park is part of a major rebuild at the club, which finished fourth in the English league last season. Villa previously sold Belgian Youri Tielemans to Manchester United this July, while his compatriot Amadou Onana is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury during the World Cup.
