A jersey worn by football legend Pelé during Brazil's first World Cup win in 1958 was sold at auction in New York on Thursday for $4.9 million, auction house Sotheby's announced. Pelé, then 17, scored two of Brazil's goals in a 5-2 win over hosts Sweden, after a 5-2 semifinal victory over France. Pelé, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, gave the jersey to his teammate and friend Didi after the 1958 final, and it remained with Didi's family for decades before being displayed in a museum, then auctioned for the first time in 2004 for an undisclosed price. After ten bids from five bidders, it sold to an anonymous buyer, becoming the second most expensive jersey in the world, according to Sotheby's. The record of $9.3 million still belongs to the jersey of Argentina's Diego Armando Maradona, which he wore on June 22, 1986 in Mexico City during the legendary quarterfinal match against England. Argentina won the match 2-1 thanks to two legendary goals by Maradona, one with his hand and the other after a series of dazzling dribbles.
