Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic, ranked 38th in the world, won her first title since Wimbledon 2024, defeating Greece's Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 on Sunday in the final of the Athens tennis tournament. The 30-year-old needed 1 hour and 43 minutes to secure the match and win her ninth title, including Roland Garros 2021, after coming from behind in the first set, overcoming a 1-4 deficit to take it in a tiebreak. The Czech then lost her serve in the second set, but fought back strongly to win it 6-3, denying Sakkari her first title in nearly three years, specifically since the Guadalajara 1000 tournament in 2023 when she won only her second title. The Athens tournament returns to the calendar after a hiatus since 1990, and Sakkari suffered the same fate as her mother Angeliki Kanellopoulou, who lost the final of the first edition in 1986 to Germany's Sylvia Hanika.
