Barcola: I have never received this many blows at all... I did not succeed in their style
France winger Bradley Barcola said he has 'never played a match like this at all' in terms of roughness, after France's 1-0 win over Paraguay in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
England manager, German Thomas Tuchel, said that the 'Three Lions' are capable of overcoming the painful memories of the World Cup at the Azteca Stadium, as they face hosts Mexico in an attempt to eliminate them on Sunday.
The England team returns to Mexico City, where they lost 40 years ago to Argentina in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in a match immortalized by Diego Maradona's famous goal, when he scored with his hand into England's net.
This time, England faces a strong challenge against one of the hosts in the round of 16, as they try to continue their quest for a first major title in 60 years.
Tuchel said in the press conference: 'As soon as you walk in here, you feel the excitement and emotions immediately. From the first moment, I felt that this would be a real World Cup match today.'
He added: 'We knew that in advance. We are in a legendary place and a historic stadium.'
But he stressed that there is no idea of 'revenge', saying: 'It is painful and still hurts, but we are not here for revenge.'
He continued: 'The same stadium, but not the same opponent. That makes no sense. We are here to write our own chapters.'
In addition to the passionate Mexican crowd support, England faces an extra challenge of playing at an altitude of over 2,240 meters above sea level, which increases the physical difficulty of the match.
The 'Three Lions' delegation arrived on Friday, a day earlier than usual, in order to adapt to the climatic and physical conditions in Mexico City.
Tuchel said the team began to feel the effect of the altitude from the first minutes of training: 'At first the players found it difficult, but over time they were able to adapt better.'
He added: 'Being here at least a day earlier gives us a chance to acclimatize to the conditions.'
Tuchel warned of the expected strong start from Mexico, saying: 'I think it is no coincidence that Mexico starts their home matches strongly and with an attacking style. I think the first 15 to 20 minutes will be the toughest.'
For his part, England captain Jordan Henderson said this clash represents the 'toughest test' of his career: 'I don't think there is a similar match in my career. I've played big matches in the Champions League, but a World Cup in Mexico against Mexico is something completely different.'
He added: 'That's why this match is very special for us. I think everyone is excited and looking forward to this encounter and the challenge it represents.'
Tuchel confirmed that Reece James is absent from the starting lineup due to injury, which puts him in a dilemma at right-back, especially since no specialized replacement was called up, drawing widespread criticism.
Jarell Quansah started at right-back during the 2-0 win over Panama and will be fit again after an ankle injury, while Jed Spence struggled during the 2-1 win over DR Congo on Wednesday.
