The encounter between England and France does not carry the same fierce rivalry that characterizes rugby matches, but the two teams, facing each other Saturday in Miami for third place in the World Cup, also share long pages of history in football.

Here is a look back at five of the most memorable encounters between the two European nations.

1966: First meeting in the finals

London, July 20, 1966. 1966 World Cup, group stage: England 2-0 France

In the first meeting between the two teams in a major tournament final stages, France, after drawing with Mexico (1-1) and losing to Uruguay (2-1), needed to win by at least two goals against England to advance from the group stage.

But under the rain and at Wembley Stadium packed with fans, things quickly went against the French, who were affected by Robert Herbin's serious cruciate ligament injury, forcing him to stay on the field as substitutions were not allowed at the time.

Roger Hunt scored two goals, giving the 'Three Lions' the win (2-0) and top spot in the group, before the English team continued their journey to claim the world title, which they have been chasing ever since.

1992: A costly draw for both sides

Malmö, Sweden, June 14, 1992. 1992 European Championship, group stage: England 0-0 France

After each team drew their first match, France with Sweden (1-1) and England with Denmark (0-0), both teams entered this second match of the European tournament under pressure.

But the summit disappointed. France, under coach Michel Platini, appeared far less convincing than in the qualifiers when they had rained goals on their opponents, and Jean-Pierre Papin's teammates settled for a drab draw with the 'Three Lions' (0-0), who were no better.

Both teams paid dearly for this draw, as they were eliminated in the first round behind Sweden and Denmark, who later won the title. Platini announced his resignation shortly after the tournament ended.

2004: Zidane turns the table in the opener

Lisbon, June 14, 2004. 2004 European Championship, group stage: France 2-1 England

In their first match of Euro 2004, France trailed 1-0 until the end of regulation time after a header from Frank Lampard, and seemed headed for a loss against an England side led by David Beckham.

But everything turned around in a few minutes of stoppage time thanks to Zinedine Zidane. The 'Blues' captain equalized with a direct free kick (90+1), then scored a penalty (90+3) to give his country a dramatic victory.

The rest of the tournament was not honorable for the French, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Greece, the eventual winners. England was no luckier, as they exited at the same stage against Portugal on penalties, in a match where Beckham sent the ball over the goal.

2012: Nasri responds to journalists

Donetsk, Ukraine, June 11, 2012. 2012 European Championship, group stage: France 1-1 England

In a scenario similar to the 2004 match, the two teams settled for a draw (1-1) in Donetsk, Ukraine, also in the group stage. But what remained in memory was not the result or the stakes, but Samir Nasri's action.

After scoring the equalizer in the 39th minute, the midfielder celebrated by putting his finger to his lips before uttering 'Shut up'.

Nasri explained after the match that his message was directed at the media, as he did not appreciate the criticism he had received, noting that he later got into another altercation with a journalist after the loss to Spain (0-2) in the quarter-finals.

2022: A tense summit

Al Khor, Qatar, December 10, 2022. 2022 World Cup, quarter-finals: France 2-1 England

After comfortable wins over Poland (3-1) and Senegal (3-0) in the round of 16, France and England met in a heavyweight clash in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The 'Blues' took an early lead with a goal from Aurélien Tchouaméni, but the French team suffered in the second half when the English equalized through a penalty converted by Harry Kane.

At the end of a breathless match, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made several crucial saves, before Olivier Giroud restored France's lead with a header, while Kane missed a second penalty in the 84th minute.
