Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, the leader of the Formula 1 World Championship, set the fastest lap time in the final practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday, while Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton suffered an accident in the final seconds of the session at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The 19-year-old Italian Antonelli recorded the best lap time of 1 minute 45.990 seconds, 0.139 seconds ahead of current world champion Lando Norris of McLaren.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took third place, and Antonelli's teammate and closest title rival, George Russell, was fourth.

Hamilton was the fifth fastest, but he gave his team's technicians a race against time to repair the car after he went into the gravel at a corner and hit the tire wall, resulting in the destruction of the car's rear wing and suspension system, with debris scattered across the track as the car bounced in the air.

The seven-time world champion told his race engineer via the team's internal radio, before getting out to inspect the damage, 'I destroyed the car, mate, I'm sorry.'

Race engineer Carlo Santi replied, 'No problem.'

Hamilton sits third in the championship, 32 points behind Antonelli, who leads Russell by 25 points after nine rounds.

Verstappen slowed down due to double yellow flags after the incident, and Williams driver Carlos Sainz almost hit the back of his car. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was sixth, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the Audi duo Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, while Red Bull's Isaac Hadjar completed the top ten.
