Bono and Shobeir better than him.. Can Martinez save his reputation against England?
In the ongoing World Cup in North America, the Argentine goalkeeper conceded only six goals up to the quarter-finals, a number statistically lower than the previous World Cup, but it has not reflected on his individual presence in matches, as the goalkeeper appeared to be searching for his rhythm rather than imposing it.
Statistics confirm this impression. Martinez has only managed 8 saves, while Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill tops the list with 23 saves up to the quarter-finals.
Martinez also missed the list of best goalkeepers in the FIFA Power Rankings, accredited by the International Federation of Association Football, for the same period, while Bono and Shobeir appeared among the top five goalkeepers in the tournament.
In this ranking, Martinez ranked 22nd among World Cup goalkeepers with 5.13 points, despite recently moving up six places at once. In contrast, Moroccan Yassine Bounou, who left the World Cup in the quarter-finals against France, ranked fourth with (7.98) points after a jump of six places at once.
Mostafa Shobeir ranked fifth with 7.78 points, and Jordan Pickford, Argentina's expected opponent in Atlanta, came directly behind the Egyptian goalkeeper in sixth place with 7.76 points.
The picture becomes clearer when examining the full list in this ranking: Diogo Costa (Portugal) leads with 8.95, followed by Gregor Kobel (Switzerland) with 8.24, then Orlando Gill (Paraguay) with 8.13, Yassine Bounou (Morocco) with 7.98 after a jump of six places.
Even Alisson, Brazil's goalkeeper who left in the round of 16, is ahead of Martinez by a large margin with 5.36 points, despite ranking only 19th.
According to the same ranking, Martinez only leads Yahia Fofana (Ivory Coast), Patrick Beach (Australia), and Lionel Mpasi (DR Congo), who are goalkeepers of teams that exited the tournament in the early rounds.
