The Portuguese Football Federation drew the curtain on the era of Spanish coach Roberto Martínez, announcing Wednesday the end of his mission at the helm of the senior team, following a journey that lasted three and a half years.

In an official statement, the federation explained that the contract of Martínez and his assistant staff had ended, thanking them for their contributions during their tenure and praising the level of professionalism and commitment they showed throughout their leadership of the national team.

The statement indicated that the most prominent achievements of the Spanish coach were leading Portugal to win the UEFA Nations League in 2025, along with establishing a sports project based on ambition and competition. The Portuguese Federation said in its statement: "We extend our thanks to Roberto Martínez and his technical staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past three and a half years, a period that witnessed winning the UEFA Nations League title in 2025, as well as the commitment and respect they showed towards the country and Portuguese football." At the same time, the president of the Portuguese Federation affirmed that work has already begun to select the new technical director, pointing out that the goal in the next phase is to maintain a winning mentality and continue competing for titles in various international competitions. The announcement of Martínez's departure comes days after the Portuguese national team exited the 2026 World Cup, thus ending the Spanish coach's tenure with the "European Brazil."
