British Open Golf Championship Considers Changing Start Time to Avoid World Cup Final Conflict
Organizers of the British Open golf championship are still studying the possibility of moving the start time of the final round on Sunday to avoid a clash with the World Cup final.
England plays Argentina in the semi-final later today, hoping to reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1966.
The match in New Jersey starts at 19:00 GMT.
The final putt in the championship is usually struck around 17:30 GMT, but if it goes to a playoff, it could overlap with the World Cup match, leaving fans in a dilemma.
Speaking about this scenario on Wednesday, Mark Darbon, chief executive of the R&A, the organizer of the British Open, said no decision has been made yet.
He told journalists on Wednesday: "I am an England football fan, so this would be a great problem to have. But I also think, as an England football fan, we should wait and see how the semi-final goes without getting ahead of ourselves."
He added: "We believe that even if we go to a three-hole playoff, we have enough time to finish the championship. So at this stage, there are no plans to change anything, but we will keep it under review and will finalize our position after the semi-final."
The 154th edition of the championship starts tomorrow, Thursday.
