"Butterfly Effect".. France Laments Draw with Iceland 9 Months Ago
France's 2-2 draw with Iceland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers may have had a far greater impact than expected, ultimately affecting the "Roosters'" path to the semifinals.
Although the draw did not affect France's qualification for the World Cup, it cost them valuable points in the FIFA rankings, as they finished 2025 in third place behind Spain and Argentina. Had they beaten Iceland, they would have ended the year with enough points to surpass both teams and become world number one before the World Cup draw.
Under the FIFA ranking system, the top two ranked teams cannot meet before the final if they top their groups. Because France remained in third place, they were placed on the opposite side of the draw from England instead of Spain, leading to a semifinal clash against the European Championship holders.
Spain defeated France 2-0, ending the "Roosters'" hopes of reaching the World Cup final for the third consecutive time.
The butterfly effect is defined as when a small event or decision leads to much larger and unforeseen consequences later, likened to a butterfly flapping its wings backward without knowing the repercussions of its flaps.
