American billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has held talks about joining a consortium led by British-Indian investor Amit Bhatia to buy a minority stake in Liverpool FC, the 20-time English league champions, according to reports published Wednesday. Bezos, one of the world's richest men, may become part of the group led by Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Sky News reported that Bezos is interested in the deal but indicated he has not yet decided to proceed with the potential plan. Forbes estimates the 62-year-old American's fortune at about £192 billion ($257 billion). Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owner, confirmed on Tuesday that the consortium led by Bhatia had contacted them to discuss buying a minority stake in the English club, six-time European champions. According to reports, Bezos has previously considered making bids to buy the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL) but decided not to proceed with either deal. Bhatia's interest in Liverpool came on the same day he stepped down from the board of Queens Park Rangers. Bhatia, 46, ended an 18-year association with the Championship club by transferring his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. In 2023, Fenway Sports Group sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty, and any deal with Bhatia, if completed, is expected to follow the same approach. According to the Financial Times, any deal with the consortium led by Bhatia would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion. Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million.
