Diaz dethrones Hakimi.. 5 special records for the Atlas Lions
The Moroccan national team put on a remarkable display in the second half of their World Cup Round of 16 match against Canada, turning a goalless first half into a big 3-0 victory, confirming their strong presence in the knockout stages.
Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring after a precise pass from Achraf Hakimi, who increased his tally to 15 World Cup appearances, strengthening his record as the African player with the most appearances in the tournament's history.
Hakimi also reached 3 assists, equaling Tahar El Khalej's achievement at the 1998 World Cup as the Moroccan player with the most assists in World Cup history.
In the closing minutes, Ibrahim Diaz continued his brilliance by setting up the second goal for Ounahi, before concluding the match with an assist to Sofiane Rahimi in the 90+8th minute, becoming the first African player in history to provide 4 assists in a single World Cup, surpassing Hakimi and El Khalej, and trailing by just one assist behind Frenchman Michael Olise, who tops the assist chart.
With this victory, the 'Atlas Lions' achieved the fourth African win in knockout stages in World Cup history, equivalent to half of all African wins combined, as Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, and Cameroon each had one win. Morocco also became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals twice, surpassing Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002), and Ghana (2010).
The Moroccan team scored their three goals from just 5 shots, a success rate of 60%, the highest in a knockout match since official statistics began at the World Cup in 1966.
