Due to 'Victory Rituals': Argentina President Refuses to Attend World Cup Final
Argentine President Javier Milei says he will not travel to New Jersey for the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, preferring to watch from home due to superstitions and rituals he believes bring victories.
Argentine President Javier Milei announced that he will not travel to the U.S. state of New Jersey to attend the highly anticipated World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, scheduled for next Sunday.
During a radio interview with "El Observador," Milei said he prefers to watch the match from his presidential residence in Olivos, stressing his adherence to the habits he has adopted while watching his country's team play.
The 55-year-old Argentine president, known for clinging to rituals he considers linked to achieving victories, explained that he will not leave for the United States "under any circumstances" and will continue to watch Argentina's matches from the same place he has used since the beginning of the tournament.
When the interviewer asked whether this decision was related to superstition, Milei acknowledged it, explaining that he makes sure to follow the matches of the "Tango" team inside the cinema hall of the presidential palace, accompanied by his sister Karina Milei, who serves as the Secretary General of the Presidency.
The Argentine president revealed another ritual he strictly follows, involving wearing a heavy winter jacket bearing the logo of the national oil company "YPF," the same one he wore during the match against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Milei recounted details of that incident, saying he wore the jacket due to the cold weather during the match against Switzerland, but took it off for a few moments, and during that time his country's team conceded a goal. He added that he immediately put the jacket back on and has not parted with it since while watching the team's matches.
Milei's announcement comes ahead of the expected final showdown between Argentina and Spain, which will take place next Sunday in New Jersey, USA, as the Argentine president insists on watching the match from the presidential palace in Olivos, adhering to the rituals he considers an essential part of supporting his country's team.
