Former Uruguayan international striker Edinson Cavani has left Argentine club Boca Juniors after defending their colors for three years, according to an announcement on Wednesday without mentioning his retirement from football despite being 39 years old.

The former Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United player terminated his contract with Boca Juniors, which he joined in July 2023, confirming information previously reported by media such as ESPN and Olé. In a video posted on Instagram, he said: 'As one of the coaches I worked with taught me, the journey is the reward. And the journey has been wonderful.'

Cavani joined the most popular club in Argentina amid high expectations, attracted by a new experience that gave him 'more reasons' to be motivated and 'give 100% in every match,' as he said. 'El Matador,' who leaves Boca without winning any title with the club, acknowledged that he later had to face 'difficult moments' that deprived him of the opportunity to 'leave a mark' on the club.

Due to frequent injuries, the Uruguayan was not sufficiently influential, playing only 81 matches, of which 27 were full games in three years, scoring 28 goals. He was also not in the plans of Boca's new coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena. He added on Instagram: 'I will never regret my decision to come... to fulfill the desire I had to play here.'

The former Uruguay striker, who defended the colors of 'La Celeste' for 15 years (136 international caps and 58 goals), won the Italian Cup with Napoli, then collected six league titles and five cup titles with Paris Saint-Germain, in addition to the Uruguayan league title with Danubio.
