Fenway Sports Group announced Friday that Michael Edwards has left his position as CEO of Football at the group, which owns English Premier League club Liverpool. The group described the move as a planned transition, as Edwards resigned after overseeing a period of significant team changes following his return in March 2024. Edwards said in a statement: 'I was honored to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment. I leave confident that Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding personnel, a clear direction, and solid foundations to ensure continued success.' Edwards first joined the club in 2011 as performance director before being promoted to sporting director in 2016. He was widely credited with helping build the squad that delivered Liverpool's first league title in 30 years in the 2019-20 season. Edwards left the club in 2022 but returned to take up the role of CEO of Football in March 2024, assuming responsibility for football operations as Liverpool prepared for the departure of then first-team manager Jurgen Klopp. Under Edwards' leadership, Liverpool implemented a new football management structure and appointed Arne Slot as Klopp's successor in June 2024. Liverpool went on to win the league title for the 20th time in 2025 under Slot, but the club parted ways with the Dutch coach after a disappointing second season and hired Andoni Iraola as his replacement last June.
