  • Who will the winner face in the semifinals?

The winner of the Norway vs England match will play Argentina or Switzerland in the semifinals in Atlanta on Wednesday.

The reigning champions outclassed most title contenders in the group stage, thanks to the unstoppable striking force of Lionel Messi.

But their unconvincing, stuttering run in the knockout phase – where they were pitted against far inferior opponents – has raised a question: can Argentina really retain their title?

Up next for the two-time world champions is Switzerland, who have quietly made a remarkable return to the quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years.

The impressive duo of Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi has won Swiss hearts, and Saturday’s clash offers them a chance to seek revenge for a World Cup defeat by Argentina in 2014.

  • How did England reach the quarterfinals?

England topped Group L with seven points, beating Croatia and Panama and drawing with Ghana.

  • How did Norway reach the quarterfinals?

Norway finished second in Group I with six points, beating Senegal and Iraq and losing to France.

  • Brutal heat and humidity could be a factor

The match in south Florida could be impacted by brutal heat and humidity that is forecast around the 5pm local time (21:00 GMT) kickoff.

Miami is currently under a heat advisory from the US National Weather Service with “feels like” temperatures rising beyond 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

“We have trained very lightly. We haven’t done much hard work. We are with the tactical sessions, but in a lower tempo and not trained for long periods. So it’s all about being fresh tomorrow,” said Norway coach Stale Solbakken, whose side have trained in Miami for the past three days.

The two countries, he said, would have to get “used to the same conditions”.

  • Welcome to our live coverage

Hello and welcome to Al Jazeera’s live coverage of England vs Norway in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.

Harry Kane has once again been England’s hero, dragging his teammates through an attritional last-16 meeting with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca that they won 3-2 despite having a man sent off.

The Bayern Munich forward has scored six goals to fire the Three Lions to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland appears to have been enjoying himself ever since he touched down in the United States and began smashing in the seven goals that have carried Norway further than ever before.

Their run, which included eliminating Brazil, has been accompanied by their fans’ joyous rowing celebration that has turned venues across the US into giant human Viking ships.

Either Argentina or Switzerland await the winner in the semifinals.
