Exceptional FIFA Move... Controversial Change Expected in World Cup Final
The Spanish national team eagerly awaits the World Cup final next Sunday at Jersey Stadium in New York, waiting for the winner of today's Wednesday match between England and Argentina.
While no official confirmation has been issued by FIFA yet, the halftime break is expected to last up to 30 minutes, more than double the usual duration, according to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, citing English media reports.
This exceptional situation is attributed to FIFA's desire to use this time for the second part of a major show, the first part of which will be held before the match.
The English newspaper The Times indicated that the show includes famous international artists such as Justin Bieber, Shakira (singer of the official World Cup song), Madonna, and the band Coldplay.
The question arises: Can FIFA do that? Can it extend the usual halftime break of 15 minutes? The answer is yes.
The Catalan newspaper added: 'In fact, we have a precedent from the Club World Cup last summer, where the halftime break in the final between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea lasted 24 minutes.'
But the key also lies in the tournament regulations themselves, issued by FIFA.
Article 1 states: 'Other binding FIFA rules or decisions may be applied for the purposes of these regulations. Such rules and decisions applied by FIFA prevail over these regulations in case of conflict, and all parties involved in the preparation, organization, and staging of the FIFA World Cup 26 must comply with them.'
In fact, the laws of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Law 7 regarding the duration of the match state: 'Players are entitled to a halftime break not exceeding 15 minutes; a short water break (not exceeding one minute) is also permitted after the first extra time period.'
Furthermore, the laws state: 'The tournament regulations must clearly specify the duration of the halftime break, which may only be changed with the referee's permission.'
