Figo: Yamal and Messi don't deserve the Ballon d'Or
Former Portuguese international Luis Figo, winner of the Ballon d'Or in 2000, said after the end of the World Cup that Spanish Lamine Yamal and Argentine Lionel Messi, stars of the final match, are not among the leading candidates to win the Ballon d'Or, although their performances were not amazing in the decisive match.
As for Spanish Rodri, he has proven his worth, and Figo believes he has a chance to win the second award, saying: "He delivered a great performance in the World Cup, which could tip the scales in his favor."
Figo said in his analysis for the "Betfair" website, as reported by Spanish newspaper "Marca": "There is talk about Real Madrid's interest in him. I think it will be difficult, because he is under contract with Manchester City, but everyone knows that Real Madrid always seeks to sign the best players in the world."
He added: "He delivered a great performance in the World Cup, although he did not stand out much in terms of goals or assists. Certainly, Mbappé and his outstanding performance in the World Cup will also make him among the contenders to win."
He continued: "Of course, I will include some Paris Saint-Germain players who won the Champions League again. Perhaps I specifically mention Vitinha and Doye, who had a great season although the World Cup was not successful for them, especially with the Portuguese national team. I will include them all among the candidates."
