(CNN) -- Egyptian midfielder Emam Ashour expressed his sorrow after his country's national team exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16.
Ashour's teammates bid farewell from the quarter-finals after losing to Argentina 3-2 in a match held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Emam Ashour wrote on his Instagram account: "Praise be to God for everything. There are defeats that hurt more than words can say, and this is one of them. I apologize to everyone who was attached to the dream, and to everyone who believed in us and waited for us to make them happy. We wanted to continue the journey and achieve what befits your support. We fought with everything we had, but it was God's will and what He willed happened."
He added: "All thanks and appreciation to the technical staff, and to all my fellow players for the effort, spirit, and fighting until the last moment. The greatest thanks to everyone who supported us, stood behind us, and believed in us from the first day to the last minute."
Ashour promised: "We will come back stronger, and we will continue to fight with everything we have to make you happy and raise Egypt's name high. Long live Egypt always."
Emam Ashour (28 years old) scored two goals in 5 matches he participated in during the current World Cup.
