The Portuguese Football Federation is set to present Jorge Jesus on Friday as the new head coach of the Portuguese national football team, replacing Spaniard Roberto Martínez, according to what AFP learned on Thursday from a source close to the matter.

The source indicated that the 71-year-old Portuguese coach and the local football federation have reached a 'full agreement' and will hold a press conference on Friday at 3:00 p.m. (14:00 GMT) at the federation's headquarters on the outskirts of Lisbon.

Jesus will take charge of Portugal five days after their elimination from the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, losing 1-0 to Spain.

The coach, who left Saudi club Al Nassr last May after leading them to the league title, is expected to sign a four-year contract, lasting until the 2030 World Cup finals, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

Jesus, a veteran of Portuguese football, has managed dozens of clubs in his home country, most notably Benfica and Sporting, the two Lisbon giants.

Abroad, he has coached Brazilian club Flamengo and Turkish side Fenerbahçe, then moved to Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal and Al Nassr, where he led the latter, which includes his compatriot star Cristiano Ronaldo, to the league title.

After Portugal's elimination on Monday, the 41-year-old Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, confirmed that this was his sixth and last World Cup, without revealing whether he intends to continue his international career.

With the Portugal team, which he has led since 2023, Roberto Martínez won the Nations League title in June 2025.
