Erling Haaland was not the only hero of Norway's historic night against Brazil, as veteran goalkeeper Orjan Nyland stole the spotlight after leading his country to a valuable 2-1 victory in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, thanks to a series of crucial saves, most notably saving a penalty in the first half.

Nyland (35), who is currently without a club after his contract with Spanish side Sevilla ended, has become one of the tournament's standout stars, playing a key role in eliminating Brazil and leading Norway to the quarterfinals.

FIFA decision changes tournament course

Nyland was not initially the first-choice goalkeeper for Norway, as attention was focused on Nikita Haikin, the Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper who obtained Norwegian citizenship this year.

But FIFA rejected Haikin's request to change his sporting nationality from Russia to Norway last May due to eligibility rules, opening the door for Nyland to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup.

He also saved his team from a certain own goal, deflecting a ball from Kristoffer Ajer with his fingertips onto the post, preserving his country's lead in one of the match's standout moments.

The Norwegian goalkeeper expressed great joy after the match, affirming that his achievement against Brazil represents the highlight of his career.

He said: 'It's amazing to be here at the World Cup, in the most important match of my life. I thank my wife, my children, and everyone who stood by me during the difficult times before the happy ones.'

Nyland revealed that he has not yet received any offers to join a new club, but he confirmed his determination to continue his career on the pitch, adding: 'I haven't checked my phone yet, but I will first enjoy this moment because it's the most important in my career.'
