The 2026 World Cup witnessed many events, some happy and others sad, but one of the worst was the martyrdom of one of this World Cup's heroes in the Gaza Strip.

The case concerns Mohammed Fawaz al-Wahidi, director of the Office of Clan Heads and Dignitaries at the Egyptian Committee in Gaza, who was martyred in a missile strike by the Zionist occupation forces last Tuesday evening, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

Al-Wahidi was not the only one killed in the bombing; two brothers aged 8 and 10, as well as another man who was in the street near the site, were also killed.

The Zionist occupation forces admitted carrying out the bombing that led to al-Wahidi's death, but stressed that they were targeting a Hamas fighter.

Al-Wahidi was one of the heroes of the 2026 World Cup in Gaza City, directly responsible for showing the tournament's matches in the strip, after many years of relief work.

Although he was the World Cup hero in Gaza, he did not see the most important match for fans there, the Egypt-Argentina round of 16 match, as the strike hit him about an hour before it started.

According to his family, the bombing hit al-Wahidi while he was in a taxi, heading to the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood south of Gaza City to watch the Egypt-Argentina match, which he had made available for viewing himself.

Palestinian crowds had gathered in force in the Gaza Strip to support the Egyptian national team in the 2026 World Cup, especially after statements by coach Hossam Hassan, who called on the world to intervene to protect the Palestinian people.
