The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Saturday that it has reached an agreement with Jurgen Klopp to become the new head coach of the German national team, but both sides are awaiting permission from the Red Bull Group, where Klopp serves as Head of Global Soccer.

The federation said in a statement: 'DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held an in-depth preliminary discussion with Jurgen Klopp in New York on Friday regarding his potential appointment as national team coach.'

It continued: 'During this constructive discussion, an understanding was reached on the key points of a potential contract.'

The statement added: 'Discussions will continue next week, and both sides are confident that the negotiations, subject to reaching an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull, can ultimately lead to a successful outcome.'

Klopp was the DFB's preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany's elimination from the Round of 32 in the World Cup following a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay.

Klopp led Liverpool to seven major trophies, including the Premier League title for the 2019/2020 season and the UEFA Champions League in 2019, before leaving the club in 2024 to work as Head of Global Soccer for energy drink brand Red Bull since January 2025.

Klopp (59) previously led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles between 2008 and 2015, and was in charge of Mainz 05 for seven years, the club where he spent most of his playing career.

Since Germany won the World Cup 12 years ago in Brazil, they have suffered consecutive group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, before their latest disappointment in the 2026 edition this summer.
