German Football Association Issues Statement on Klopp Negotiations
The German Football Association announced on Saturday that it has concluded the first round of negotiations with coach Jürgen Klopp in New York City to succeed Julian Nagelsmann.
Officials of the German Football Association are in New York to hold talks with Klopp, who currently serves as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull Group and is also working as an analyst for the German channel Magenta TV throughout the World Cup.
The German Football Association had earlier confirmed that Klopp is its first choice to succeed Nagelsmann, who left his position after Germany's elimination from the World Cup by Paraguay.
Reuters published the German Football Association's statement, which clarified: "The President of the German Football Association Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held an extensive preliminary meeting with Klopp yesterday in New York to discuss the possibility of him taking over as head coach of the national team."
The statement added: "During this constructive meeting, an understanding was reached on the basic terms of a potential contract."
It continued: "Negotiations will continue next week, and both parties are confident that the talks can be concluded successfully, provided an agreement is reached with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull Group."
Klopp is the most popular choice among German fans, but he sparked controversy during the World Cup after hinting that Nagelsmann's days at the helm of the coaching staff might be numbered, before later apologizing for those remarks.
