Achraf Hakimi continued to make history at the World Cup, equaling Senegal's historic record for number of matches, as he played for Morocco against France on Thursday in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.

Hakimi reached 16 matches in his World Cup career, tying the total number of matches played by the entire Senegal national team in the tournament's history.

Hakimi also strengthened his position as the African player with the most World Cup appearances, ahead of his compatriots Azzedine Ounahi (13 matches) and Yassine Bounou (12 matches).

Behind them, Cameroon's François Omam-Biyik, Ghana's Asamoah Gyan, and Senegal's Ismaïla Sarr are tied with 11 matches each.

At the African national team level, Morocco raised its tally to 29 matches in World Cup history, continuing to top the list, ahead of Cameroon (26), then Nigeria and Tunisia (21 each), Ghana (19), and Algeria (17), according to the French network 'stats foot'.
