Spanish biologist and football enthusiast Jesús Ortea has named a newly discovered species of sea snail after Vozinha, the goalkeeper of Cape Verde's national football team, honoring him after he amazed the crowd by saving all of Spain's goal attempts in his country's first World Cup appearance. Ortea discovered the small, red mollusk, which he named 'Aldisa Vozinha,' in the Caribbean Sea, and timed the announcement to coincide with the World Cup. Ortea said in a research paper, 'We chose the name Vozinha as a tribute to the goalkeeper who played a prominent role in his country's first World Cup match against Spain.' Vozinha, 40, became one of the tournament's standout names, helping his country reach the Round of 32, where he delivered another impressive performance in a thrilling extra-time loss to defending champions Argentina. Ortea, an emeritus professor at the University of Oviedo, spent years studying the waters around the Cape Verde archipelago and was awarded the Order of Merit by the island nation in 2023. The 75-year-old biologist's passion for football had previously been evident in naming marine species after former Costa Rica and Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, as well as after Quini, the striker for Spain and Sporting Gijón in the 1970s and 1980s.
