Ivan Toney Starts; Theo Hernandez Makes Fifth Appearance
English Ivan Toney, striker of Al-Ahli first football team, will face France on Saturday in the third-place match, in his first start for his country in the 2026 World Cup. Toney was on the bench during the group stage and knockout rounds, before coming on as a substitute in the match against Argentina, which England lost 1-2 in the semi-final. German Thomas Tuchel, England manager, relied on Toney in the starting lineup instead of Harry Kane, whom he placed on the bench. Tuchel made eight changes to his starting lineup compared to the one that faced Argentina, most notably besides Toney, the inclusion of Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Eberechi Eze replacing Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson, and Jude Bellingham. On the other hand, French Theo Hernandez, left-back of Al-Hilal, plays his fifth match in the World Cup after Didier Deschamps, the Roosters' coach, placed him in the starting lineup for the match against England. Hernandez had previously started twice against Senegal and Norway in the group stage, and came on as a substitute twice during the matches against Sweden in the round of 32 and Spain in the semi-final. Deschamps' situation was no different from Tuchel's, as he also made seven changes to his lineup, including the participation of Malo Gusto, Rayan Cherki, and Désiré Doué instead of Jules Koundé, Bradley Barcola, and Ousmane Dembélé who were starters in the previous match against Spain.
