Kane: The best coach in the world leads us
Harry Kane, captain of the England national football team, dismissed media speculation about a rift between his teammate Jude Bellingham and German coach Thomas Tuchel following the match against Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals. England face a decisive match against Argentina on Wednesday in the World Cup semi-finals, aiming for their second final appearance after 1966 when they won the title against West Germany, their only trophy in all competitions. Their best World Cup results were reaching the semi-finals in 1990 and 2018. Questions arose about team cohesion after Tuchel said they were lucky to win 2-1 against Norway and that he was not satisfied with the players' performance by any measure. When told that Tuchel described England's performance as "random", Bellingham (23), who scored two goals in consecutive matches, said: "Yeah, well, whatever. Maybe he doesn't know what it's like to play in such conditions against Erling Haaland, Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sorloth. It's not easy to play against this team." Kane told the BBC: "When you play a match like that and you're asked a question just five minutes after the final whistle, and he didn't really know what was said, what do you want Jude to say?" He added: "We had just come out of a tough match. It's easy to try to create this divide. That seems to be common in the English media during these major tournaments. But the reality is the complete opposite." He continued: "The position the team has reached now is the result of our full cohesion, not just the players, but the coach and the technical staff as well. Sometimes things are blown out of proportion." Kane said England players appreciate their German coach's frankness and direct style: "He acts naturally and people appreciate that. When he speaks, his words are not pre-prepared. That's what makes him himself. And when it comes naturally, you believe it, you believe what he says and trust his style." He added: "He is one of the best coaches in the world for a reason, and we understand that. Over the past two years, we've gotten to know him and learned what makes him happy."
