(CNN) – Spain and Barcelona player Pablo Gavi commented on Argentine star Lionel Messi's post after losing the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, describing him as 'always number one'.

Messi published a written message to Argentine fans after the 'Tango Dancers' loss to Spain in the World Cup final, in which he expressed great pain over the defeat, but also expressed pride in the group that reached the World Cup final twice.

Gavi wrote a comment to 'Leo' on his post, saying: 'You will always be number 1.'

Gavi had been involved in a scuffle with Argentina player Leandro Paredes after the match, which Spain won with a solitary goal scored by Ferran Torres in the second half of extra time.

Messi had an exceptional tournament for his country at the age of 39, scoring 8 goals and providing 4 assists to lead Argentina to their third World Cup final after 2014 and 2022.

Messi and Gavi never played together at Barcelona, as the Spanish player was promoted to the first team in the summer of 2021, the same summer that 'Leo' left the Camp Nou walls.
