Mbappé Continues to Chase Messi for World Cup Top Scorer
French star Kylian Mbappé continued his brilliance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently being held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Mbappé opened the scoring for France in their quarter-final match against Morocco on Thursday evening local time, in the 60th minute of the game currently being played in Boston, USA.
The goal came from a superb strike by the Real Madrid star, who shot from inside the penalty area, placing the ball to the left of Morocco's goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who attempted to save it in vain as it hit the back of the net.
Thus, Mbappé made up for a penalty he took in the first half that Bounou skillfully saved, and reached 8 goals in the current edition of the tournament, sharing the top scorer spot with Argentina's Lionel Messi.
Mbappé also continued to chase Messi in the race for the top of the all-time World Cup scorers list, having reached 20 goals in his tournament career, one goal behind the Argentine star (the leader).
Mbappé scored 4 goals in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and 8 goals in the previous World Cup in Qatar in 2022, where he won the Golden Boot, in addition to his 8 goals in the current edition.
It is noted that this is Mbappé's 64th goal for the French national team, for which he has played 104 international matches.
