French star Kylian Mbappé expressed his confidence that Lionel Messi will be able to score a goal in the World Cup final against Spain, which would bring him back to the top of the all-time World Cup scorers list, tied with him.

Mbappé scored two goals during France's 4-6 loss to England in the third-place match, taking the lead alone, awaiting what Messi would do against Spain.

AS newspaper published Mbappé's comments after the match, where he said: 'Messi will score tomorrow, he always scores.'

He explained that individual achievements come second compared to collective achievements, even when it comes to a title as big as the all-time World Cup top scorer.

He continued: 'I would have preferred not to be the all-time World Cup top scorer and to play tomorrow's match,' referring to the final that would pit Argentina against Spain, the team that eliminated France in the semi-finals.

After trailing 4-0 at halftime, the French team put up a strong reaction in the second half.

Mbappé commented: 'I don't know what happened, we saw two completely different halves. In the first half we did not respect this shirt, and I don't understand that, and we cannot allow ourselves what happened. In the second half we played at a high level and showed more character. We won the second half, but we didn't win the match. I wish we had done it for coach Deschamps.'
