(CNN)-- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi congratulated his country's national team after qualifying for the round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 'Pharaohs' team advanced to the round of 16 in the World Cup after defeating Australia on penalties 4-2 following a 1-1 draw in a match held at the Dallas stadium on Friday.

El-Sisi wrote on his Facebook account: 'I congratulate the sons of Egypt, the heroes of the national football team, on this historic achievement of qualifying for the round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in the team's history.'

He added: 'You have proven that belief in ability, competing as a team, and determination to win achieve accomplishments. Best of luck in what is to come, and God willing, the journey of achievement and pride continues.'
