From the Mexico vs. England match

Friday/Saturday, July 10, 2026

The Mexican Football Federation announced the appointment of Rafael Márquez as head coach of the senior national team, succeeding Javier Aguirre, as part of preparations for the 2030 World Cup. Márquez (47 years old) had served as Aguirre's assistant since August 2024, until Mexico's recent elimination in the round of 16 following a 3-2 defeat to England. Although the succession plan for Márquez to replace Aguirre had been in place since 2024, rumors recently circulated about the possibility of the Mexican Federation looking for another coach.

The Mexican Federation stated in its announcement: 'The appointment of Rafael Márquez is part of an organized transition plan aimed at ensuring continuity of work, enhancing talent development, and optimally handling upcoming commitments.'

While Mexico currently has no scheduled matches, Márquez is expected to make his debut as head coach during the international break scheduled for late September and early October.
