Mohamed Hany: Top Scorer of Own Goals in World Cup History
The player entered
Mohamed Hany, the right back of the Egyptian national team, entered the history of the World Cup through the back door, after scoring an own goal that gave Australia a draw in the Round of 32 match of the 2026 World Cup. Hany headed a free kick into his own net, repeating the own goal he had scored in the first match against Belgium.
Hany became the most prolific scorer in his own net in World Cup history, and also became the first player in the tournament's history to score two own goals in a single edition (2026 World Cup). Historically, no player in previous editions (from 1930 to 2022) had scored more than one own goal in their entire World Cup career, with dozens of players tied with just one. It is worth noting that the only own goal in a final was scored by Croatian Mario Mandžukić for France in the 2018 World Cup final.
