Mitoma apologizes after hitting cyclist with car
Japanese Kaoru Mitoma, player of English Premier League club Brighton, apologized for hitting a cyclist with his car in Tokyo, according to an announcement by his management company via a press release on Thursday. The player's management, the 29-year-old, explained that he collided with a cyclist at 8:45 AM on Wednesday Tokyo time, adding: 'The accident happened due to the player not paying attention to the road ahead. Immediately after the accident, he checked on the other party and complied with the instructions of the police officers who arrived at the scene.' The statement continued: 'We would like to extend our deepest and sincerest apologies to the person who suffered injuries in the accident, as well as to all those affected. Mitoma takes this accident very seriously and feels sympathy and regret towards the injured person.' The cyclist was taken to the hospital for a medical examination, and was found to have bruises, while Mitoma was unharmed. Mitoma missed the 2026 World Cup, currently being held in North America, after sustaining an injury while playing in the English Premier League, less than a week before Japan announced its squad for the finals, which they exited in the round of 32 at the hands of Brazil. Mitoma was excluded from the Japan squad after a hamstring injury during Brighton's 3-0 win over Wolverhampton last May. Mitoma is considered one of Japan's top players, and scored the winning goal in a friendly match between his country and England at Wembley last March, which ended 1-0.
