Norris exceeds limits, drops 10 places
British driver Lando Norris, McLaren driver and Formula 1 world champion, was handed a 10-place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix scheduled for next Sunday, after exceeding the maximum allowed number of power unit components and surpassing the limit for control electronics. McLaren issued a press release after race officials announced the penalty, stating: "Although the control electronics unit installed in Japan and used in all sessions since the Miami Grand Prix worked efficiently and reliably, Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains has since introduced a series of reliability-related upgrades, but to benefit from these upgrades, we must accept a 10-place grid penalty for Lando's car to use a new unit." The statement added: "We chose to implement this change in Belgium, a circuit that offers more overtaking opportunities compared to the next two races in Hungary and the Netherlands." McLaren confirmed its intention to use this fourth unit for the remainder of the season, explaining that the first unit suffered a major failure in China during March, which prevented Norris from starting that race, leading to the installation of the second unit at the Japanese Grand Prix, also held in March, before it was withdrawn for repairs after issues emerged during practice. After being repaired, the same unit later suffered a major failure during practice in Monaco in June. Norris was on pole for last year's race, but McLaren has struggled with performance this season and currently sits third in the constructors' championship behind Mercedes and Ferrari at the top. Drivers are allowed to use three control electronics units per season, and this change exceeds the allowed limit, resulting in an automatic penalty.
