Noskova sets up all-Czech final with Muchova at Wimbledon
Linda Noskova set up the first all-Czech final in women's singles at the Grand Slams after defeating Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday in the semifinals of the Wimbledon tennis championships.
After the high tension during her compatriot Karolina Muchova's win over Coco Gauff earlier on Centre Court in soaring temperatures, Noskova (21) won relatively comfortably in a calm match.
Noskova, the ninth seed playing her first Grand Slam semifinal today, appeared calm and confident throughout, only showing emotion when Kostyuk sent a forehand long on the second match point.
Noskova said on court: 'A Grand Slam final is not easy at all, but I just tried to stay as patient as possible, keep my composure, and somehow get the last point.'
She added: 'When I play my best, I know I can beat the best players in the world.'
Saturday's final will be the first between players from the same country at a Grand Slam final since the 2017 US Open, when Sloane Stephens beat compatriot Madison Keys.
With Noskova's semifinal win, it means a Czech woman will win the title for the third time in four years.
Noskova said of Muchova, who saved a match point to beat Gauff in a thriller: 'Karolina is a great fighter and an amazing player, but above all a great person. I'm happy to play my first final with her.'
With London in another heatwave, fans on Centre Court looked exhausted by the time Noskova and Kostyuk entered the court for the match in temperatures that remained in the mid-30s Celsius.
The calm atmosphere did not help, especially with a series of easy service games from both players, as excitement and surprises were rare between these two powerful players. But Kostyuk, a French Open semifinalist, was the first to falter, trailing 0-40 on her serve in the tenth game, allowing Noskova to advance calmly.
Noskova led 3-1 in the second set, but Kostyuk broke back with a decisive forehand, but that spark failed to ignite the Ukrainian player, who was not at her best.
Noskova, who was solid, kept her patience and waited for another error from Kostyuk, which came when Kostyuk was serving to stay in the match.
