The German Football Association announced today (Friday) the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as the head coach of the national team, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned from his position following an early exit from the 2026 World Cup in the Round of 32 at the hands of Paraguay.

The German Association stated in a statement on its official website: "Jürgen Klopp will take over as the new head coach of the German men's national team, as the 59-year-old coach signed a four-year contract today at the German Football Association headquarters in Frankfurt, and he will lead Germany in the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup."

First comment from Klopp

For his part, Klopp said after taking on the role: "Rarely do we Germans come together like we do for the national team, and that is precisely what makes this role very special for me. I am grateful for all the experiences I have had and what I learned during the past year and a half at Red Bull, and to everyone for their willingness to find the solution that made this possible."

He added: "I am now looking forward to taking on this special role in German football, and we will approach it together with humility and patience, striving to build a team that fights for each other, enjoys football, and receives full support from all over our country."

First test against the Netherlands

Klopp will begin his journey with the German national team during the upcoming international break, which will feature four matches between late September and early October. The first match for the German team under the veteran coach will be against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 as part of the UEFA Nations League, followed by a home match against Greece in Augsburg on September 27, then facing Serbia in Munich on October 1, and another match with Greece in Thessaloniki on October 4.
