(CNN)-- The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) recently revealed the opening of an investigation into what happened after the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which was held at MetLife Stadium last Sunday.

The 'Matador' team had won the latest World Cup title after defeating the 'Tango' team by a goal, but their players engaged in a brawl immediately after the final whistle.

FIFA said in a statement: "After evaluating the relevant match reports of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in accordance with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a specialized public prosecutor in discipline and ethics to investigate potential violations of the FIFA Disciplinary Code regarding the events that occurred after the match."

What happened after the match?

Seconds after the final whistle blew, it appeared that Spaniard Rodri approached opponent player Nahuel Molina, before they exchanged words.

At that time, Spaniard Eric Garcia attempted to end the altercation immediately and pushed his opponent Nahuel Molina away, before Argentine Leandro Paredes intervened and made matters worse.

Leandro Paredes was seen pushing Eric Garcia by the neck, then, along with his teammate Thiago Almada, pushed Spaniard Gavi and threw some punches at him, before the players and staff of both teams ended the confrontation.

As a result, Leandro Paredes, 32, received a red card.
