Player receives death threats after missed World Cup chance
Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth has been subjected to a violent campaign of abuse and death threats following his country's exit from the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup at the hands of England.
Lena Selnes, Sørloth's girlfriend, posted on her Instagram account samples of the abuse and threats they received after the match held on Saturday in Miami.
One comment read: 'Please kill yourself, you idiot,' while another wrote: 'Tell your man to leave Norway and jump off a cliff.'
A third comment went even further, saying: 'I will kill him.'
These offensive messages are believed to stem from the Atlético Madrid striker wasting a golden chance when Norway was leading England 1-0, as he opted to shoot instead of passing to his teammate Erling Haaland, who was in a better position to score.
Selnes said: 'The World Cup and football bring joy, but they also bring a lot of hate. I really don't want to give this much attention, but I had to after reading these comments.'
