Qatar, Infantino, and 48 Clubs: An Impending Revolution in the Club World Cup
Qatar is positioning itself to host the next Club World Cup, with talks underway between clubs and FIFA. A winter schedule, backed by Florentino Pérez and Gianni Infantino, is being considered to minimize disruption.
As the World Cup for national teams enters its decisive stages, attention temporarily turns to the Club World Cup.
According to Sport newspaper citing AS, Qatar is strengthening its chances of becoming the host country for the next edition of the Club World Cup.
Discussions have already begun between clubs and FIFA, with several topics on the table regarding how to fit the tournament into the match schedule.
The possibility of Qatar being chosen to host the next edition also brings back a model similar to the 2022 World Cup, by holding the tournament during the winter.
However, this idea is not new; during the last election campaign for the presidency of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, one of the most prominent supporters of the tournament alongside Gianni Infantino, hinted at the need to find a new window in the season's calendar to hold the tournament.
The option of moving it to the winter months is still on the table, which would require a rethink of the entire season's planning, but its impact would be less than that caused by the World Cup for national teams, as it would only involve rearranging dates rather than suspending competitions for several weeks.
