Qatar Stars League: Al Sadd Crowned Champions After Al Shamal Loss to Qatar SC
From the match between Qatar SC and Al Shamal
Doha, April 13 (QNA) - Al Sadd were crowned champions of the Qatar Stars League (QSL) one round before the end of the tournament, after their direct rival Al Shamal lost to Qatar SC 2-0 in a postponed match from Round 17 held today at Al Bayt Stadium.
Al Shamal's points remained at 37 in second place, five points behind leaders Al Sadd with 42 points, who secured their third consecutive title and 19th in their history regardless of the result of their final match against Al Shamal in Round 22 scheduled for April 28.
Meanwhile, Qatar SC raised its points to 35 and moved to fourth place, trailing Al Rayyan in third on goal difference, and ahead of Al Gharafa who dropped to fifth also on goal difference.
Qatar SC imposed a strong dominance from the start of the match, opening the scoring early through Ahmed Al Rawi, who exchanged passes with Nayef Al Hadhrami and shot into the net in the 8th minute. Brazilian Joao Pedro doubled the lead in the 18th minute after capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Babacar Seck and Colombian defender Jaison Murillo during a goal kick.
Qatar SC completed the match with ten men after defender Ali Saoudi was sent off following a VAR review for preventing Algerian Baghdad Bounedjah from a clear goalscoring opportunity in the 45+7 minute.
Despite Al Shamal's attempts and their dominance in the first half, Qatar SC held on to their lead until the end to win 2-0.
