Record: Spain Keeps Six Consecutive Clean Sheets in World Cup
The Spanish national football team has become the first to keep a clean sheet in six consecutive World Cup matches, after finishing their round of 16 match of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Portugal 1-0. The previous record was held by Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006-2010) with five consecutive clean sheets, but the brilliance of goalkeeper Unai Simón against Portugal gave Spain this historic achievement. 'La Roja' began their record run in the 2022 edition when they drew 0-0 with Morocco in the round of 16 before losing on penalties. The team continued its outstanding defensive record in the current edition starting from the group stage with a goalless draw against Cape Verde and wins over Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Uruguay (1-0). In the round of 32, Spain defeated Austria 3-0, and finally beat Portugal 1-0 to snatch qualification to the round of 16 for the sixth time in their World Cup history. The Spanish defense has been notable for its stability in lineup during previous matches, blending experience with youth, consisting of full-backs Pedro Porro (27 years old) and Marc Cucurella (27), and center-backs Aymeric Laporte (32) and Pau Cubarsí (18). Except for Laporte, who participated in the 2022 edition, the three other defenders appeared in the World Cup for the first time. In addition to the team's achievement, goalkeeper Unai Simón broke the record of Italian Walter Zenga, who kept five clean sheets in 1990 with a total of 517 minutes of play in that edition when he was 36 years old. Simón, the 29-year-old Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper, kept a clean sheet in all six matches for Spain, totaling 609 minutes.
