Tunisian President Kais Saied issued a presidential pardon ordering the release of former football federation president Wadii Jari, who has been in prison since October 2023.

Jari, who headed the football federation between 2012 and 2023, is being pursued in cases related to financial corruption and violation of administrative and legal procedures, which he has consistently and absolutely denied.

Before the pardon decision, Jari was subject to a three-year sentence for administrative financial violations, which he denies, having issued protest statements and gone on hunger strikes in his prison.

President Saied issued a pardon for hundreds of prisoners on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of Republic Day, which falls on July 25.

The decision included opposition presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel, in addition to Wadii Jari.
