Australian media reports revealed on Friday that Australia national team striker Cristian Volpato tested positive for cocaine in a drug test, after being stopped on suspicion of speeding in Sydney.

New South Wales Police said they stopped a 22-year-old man twice for speeding, after he was driving a BMW at 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the Anzac Bridge early Friday.

Police added that they issued a traffic citation to the driver and suspended his international driver's license for six months, while investigations are ongoing.

According to local media, the driver in question is Volpato, based on information in the police statement.

Football Australia confirmed it is aware of the allegations against one of its players, stating it has been in contact with the player and will continue to monitor the case and provide support during the proceedings, without revealing his identity.

The Professional Footballers Association of Australia also said it is following the incident and stressed its commitment to providing necessary support to the player.

Volpato plays for Italian club Sassuolo and previously represented Italy's youth teams before deciding to play for Australia's senior team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Neither the player nor his club have officially commented on the incident.
